Iambic
A foot which starts with an unaccented and ends with an accented (stressed) syllable. It is the most common meter in the English language and naturally falls into everyday conversation. An example is "To be or not to be" (the accented syllables are italicized) from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Trochaic
The opposite of an iambic meter. It begins with an accented then followed by an unaccented syllable. An example is the line "Doule, doule, toil and trouble." from Shakespeare's Macbeth.
Anapestic
A foot which has two unaccented syllables followed by an accented syllable. Example: "I arise and unbuild it again" from Shelley's Cloud.

Types of poem
and her tail clinging to rocks all wave-hewn,
as her scales glisten with bubbles and brine,
she misses her freshwater step-sister,
the voluptuous vamp of the Rhine.
Splashing down like a swift-diving sea loon,
a semi-manned space capsule floats, rests –-
now cracks like a metal egg hatched on a moon.
Steel-skinned, he wades out, while whirring a whine:
Wanting his mama, this sky-sailing mister,
Crying dry tears for the mother-lode mine.
Such presence of mutual absence: a common boon?
Half-girl + demi-boy, sea with sky nests.
Fabled anatomy and automaton, both smitten, thus swoon
Into marriage-mix mystery, a miracle sign:
No human hearts to meld, nor Cupid’s wounds to blister,
When myth-born maid and man-made parts entwine.
Narrative poem
-poem that tell a story
-With tresses all seaweed-y and shell-strewn
but barely brushing her breasts, and her tail clinging to rocks all wave-hewn,
as her scales glisten with bubbles and brine,
she misses her freshwater step-sister,
the voluptuous vamp of the Rhine.
Splashing down like a swift-diving sea loon,
a semi-manned space capsule floats, rests –-

Ballads
-poems that talk about love, death, betray
As I walked along the road one day
Kicking up stones along the way,
I saw a bird of unusual size
Who had a large beak and small, beady eyes.
He strutted about and ruffled his wings
Then he did the most ominous thing.
He let out a screech and puffed out his chest
I wanted to run from this evil pest
Lyrics
-poems that express feeling throughout the poem
The eyes beside had wrung them dry,
And breaths were gathering sure
For that last onset, when the king
Be witnessed in his power.
Epic
-poems that talk about heroes using fancy language
This poem is epic
so I named it so
it's more epic than wind and snow
which are in there own respects quite epic
snow could be described as ghetto
and wind can take on epic forms
like a spinning tiger with legs made of iron bars
that would be pretty epic
infact I think that happened in outer mongolia
to a young girl how got hit by the iron bars
sadly she died
but the type of death was one we all wish for
over exposure to pure epicness
like viewing a snail with a lightsaber who flies over mountains made of cheese
that's bleedin' epic
imagine it if you can
can you?
Sonnets
-poems that written in 14 lines and follow iambic pentameter
I stroll along a fragrant country lane
With honeysuckle perfume on the air –
And feathered crooner’s warble to revere –
Then cross a golden sea of flowing grain
In empathy – it seems to sense my pain
Of knowing all was done with my affair –
Her empty meaning now the solitaire
She cast away – betrothment all in vain.
But oceans team with many fish to catch
So I must up and hoist another sail
And seek the one that really waits for me,
For soon auspicious breezes will prevail
In guiding forth to find a truer match:
The one to take my hand as wife to be.
Odes
-Type of lyrics poem that written to celebrate things or event
I am new to writing poems and I hope I can learn from all of you.
By the way, I learned how to write this kind of poem because of
An Ode to Christmas. Thank you very much!
An Ode to Halloween
When you see a child
In a costume scary and wild
You know it is Halloween.
When kids go trick-or-treats
And get lots and lots of sweets
You know it is Halloween.
When the trees give up their yellow leaves
And the dead give back their R.I.P.s
You know it is Halloween.
An Ode to scrumptious snacks
An Ode to skeletons that clack
An Ode to Dracula
An Ode to tarantulas
An Ode to Halloween
An Ode to the year’s best time
An Ode to clocks that chime
An Ode to Halloween

Line
-A single line in a stanza form a poem
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were- I have not seen
As others saw- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring-
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone-
And all I lov'd- I lov'd alone-
As others were- I have not seen
As others saw- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring-
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone-
And all I lov'd- I lov'd alone-

Extended Metaphor
-Like metaphor, extended metaphor is a way people say things without telling them out but continue throughout the stanza
-He is the pointing gun, we are the bullets of his desire.
All the world's a stage and men and women merely players.
Let me count my loves of thee, my rose garden, my heart, my fixed mark, my beginning and my end.
-Extended metaphor makes reader think to find out what the meaning of the poem, tricky always makes people curious and want to read it.

Symbol
-something that represents somethings else, like pigeon for peace, Red sign for stop.
-Rose, thou art sick!

That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.
